Lack of Consistency in Womens Tennis

Clijsters fairy-tale comeback in 2009

No.1 Player

The last Grand Slam of 2009 - US Open - saw the return of Kim Clijsters. Not only was she good at her game, she was unbeaten at the tournament culminating in the title truimph!!!

This highlighted the rigor with which Kim came back after giving birth to her daughter but in yet another way, underlined the lack of consistency in the Women's field.

I would not say that there is a lack of depth - there are many players who are good enough to win on their given day. The issue is with the consistency. The players are just not consistent - a good run in one tournament does not exactly follow with a similar run in the next tourney.

Added to the inconsistency is the refusal of the Williams sisters to play in the tournaments other than Grand Slams. They chose their venues to suit their moods thereby reducing the value of the ones they do not play in.

Dinara Safina was No.1 for quite a long time without winning any Grand Slam - there were quite a few bytes written on this fact amid a lot of discussion. She was consistent in reaching the latter rounds but invariably failed at the end.

This year, there is yet another comeback. Justine Henin is coming back after a layoff of 2 years. She was able to reach the finals of the first tournament - yet another sign.

The 'ova's of the world are doing well but not good enough for the top - there lies the misery of the Women's tennis.

I agree with you completely. Unlike men's tennis, the rankings of women's tennis change as often as Maria Sharapova changes her outfits. With Sharapova and Ivanovic already out of the tournament, my bet is on one of the come-backs to take the title.
